Bridgeport Historic State Park
Built in 1862, Bridgeport is the longest single span covered bridge in the country. It is 251 feet and one of just 14 covered bridges in the state. It was constructed from local Douglas fir on granite blocks using a unique type of construction called the Warren Truss with an auxiliary Burr arch. The bridge was used extensively during the Gold Rush days by Wells Fargo stagecoaches as they rode to the different northern mines.

Penn Valley location: 50 miles north east of Sacramento and east of Marysville on Highway 20.
Climate & Weather
The weather in Penn Valley is moderate. During the summer there are mostly dry days and cool nights. The rainy season is usually between November and April. Extremes in weather are rare for this area.
History
According to a legend, Penn Valley got it's name from the fact a livestock "pen" was built there in the early days. For lack of a better name, folks started calling it "Pen Valley". An extra "n" was added sometime later and it became "Penn Valley".
One of Penn Valley's early nicknames was "Pantry of the Northern Mines." The area had many farms, ranches and was known for its rich agricultural lands.
